29 Mar, // On February 26th, 1974, President Nixon issued Presidential
Proclamation 4270 establishing March 29th as Vietnam Veterans Day. The date
selected was the one-year anniversary of the departure of the last American
combat soldier from South Vietnam. The proclamation directed that the United
States flag be flown on all public buildings on that day and requested
Federal, State and local Governments, as well as civic and patriotic
organizations to give their enthusiastic support through appropriate
ceremonies and observances.
